Mampong School for the Deaf cries for support

Headmistress of the Mampong Demonstration School for the Deaf (DEMODEAF) has made a passionate appeal to government to come to their aid to ensure the school keeps running.

Mad. Regina Danquah who was speaking on Radio Univers called on government to give the school the needed attention as they have been neglected for far too long. She said, the government has paid very little attention to the school hence making it difficult to continue serving persons with hearing challenges.

According to her, letters to the government to get a fence wall around the school to protect students have not been acknowledged.

While calling on government to in addition to providing more funding and education materials, construct a footbridge in front of the school, Madam Danquah explained that the school recently lost two of its students and had one of its teachers injured as a result of speeding vehicles that ply the major road between the school and its dormitories.

Mad. Danquah also revealed that amongst the many challenges the school faced was the neglect of some wards by their parents. She said some parents dumped their wards in the school and refused to pay them visits.

“Others visited once every fortnight. When you call for PTA meetings, they would not come.”

Money earmarked by government for the school has not been forthcoming and it is too meager to cater for the needs of the students.

The Mampong Demonstration School for the deaf was started in 1957, as the first school built to take care of the deaf and dumb in Ghana. Conditions at the school today needs much to be desired.
